Mmmmmmm....
The aroma of onions boiling fills the house, stinging my eyes. Oh how hubby and I love our traditional Creamed Onions. This scent more than any other heralds Thanksgiving morning for me. I remember when I was little waking on Thanksgiving morning to this very same aroma, as my mother boiled onions for stuffing, not Creamed Onions. The latter recipe is a tradition of hubby's family, and has fallen to us to make each year.
BTW, hubby has no problem peeling all the onions. He sheds nary a tear; where I can only peel 2 or 3 before my eyes become unbearably irritated and flooded with tears. I attribute it to the fact that he wears contacts which protect his eyes from the "fumes;" my oldest daughter can also peel onions with ease and she wears contacts. Has anyone else had this experience? Hubby just says it's because he is so tough :\ Regardless, I am glad that my wimpy eyes and I get out of that job every year.
We did our pie baking yesterday. My favorite helpers were eager to help create luscious banana cream and raspberry ganache pies. We made two of each--one to take and one to keep:)
I heard a comment at a soccer game (indoor) last night that ummm, bothered me. A 20-something girl (who apparently works as a teacher/student teacher/para in a Kindergarten class and had some thoughts about Kindergarten education with which I vehemently disagreed--but that is a different post) was talking to a 20-something man about today's holiday. He arrogantly proclaimed that he doesn't celebrate this "disgusting" holiday. He claimed it is celebrating our conquering and killing the Native Americans and he refuses to participate. Although the young lady pointed out that this happened well-before any Indian killing happened and we were at peace with them at that First Thanksgiving, he continued to arrogantly proclaim this celebration "disgusting." Poor, ignorant boy.
While there are many things in our country's past that are not cause for celebration (slavery, the way we treated the Indians, even the religious intolerance practiced by the Puritans--the very people who came to this country to escape religious persecution! and errr, our current administration) we celebrate today because we are thankful that some of those Puritans survived that first horrendous winter, that our country, despite its pockmarks, has grown and flourished and is a place where personal liberty and human rights prevail. We celebrate today to thank God for his mercy, his love and his goodness to us. We celebrate the opportunity to live and work in this greatest country on Earth; and as we celebrate, we take this opportunity to pray for those less fortunate, who will not have turkey and stuffing or pies, who will not have a warm home or bed to sleep in, or who will spend this day alone. We will pray and remember them, and if our faith is a living faith we will devote our time, treasure and talent to helping those less fortunate. This is the message of Thanksgiving. This is why we celebrate. Today, I will pray that the poor young man at the soccer game will one day come to know this.
A Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all!

Thanksgiving Poetry
by Ethan Sweet, age 10IEW U.S. History Writing
(great program)
OK, since I wasn't able to make it big enough to read, here is the text below:
Give Thanks
Stepping excitedly into the fragrant kitchen,
Holding a warm, moist pie,
Greeted by the smiling faces of my loving family.
Savory, succulent, seasoned turkey,
Fluffy, white mashed potatoes,
Slippery, tart cranberry sauce,
Doughy, chewy rolls,
Cause hungry stomachs to rumble.
Loud laughter, clattering silverware,
Enjoying being with family,
Giving thanks to God.

Thankful
I am thankful for:
* the mercy and love of our God, whose providential care is always with us, especially during the darkest times.
* the truth and beauty of the Catholic Church
* my hard-working, faithful, handsome husband and the love and bond we share that gets stronger every year.
* the privilege of being a mother to my five children, who have forever changed me and give my life so much joy and meaning.
* our two saints in heaven, who are praying for us.
* the circumstances which have allowed us to build this new-to-us-but-used house on this particular piece of land. God's hand has been so apparent throughout this process.
* the gift of homeschooling. The value and benefit of homeschooling becomes very clear as my children have gotten older. As we work our way through the high school years, with frustration, fear and doubt as my ready companions, there have come moments with both my older children, where I can see clearly that the struggle was so worth it. It's a marathon, difficult to do, but with so many rewards at the end. I am thankful for those joyful moments and the bond homeschooling creates with those teens, even when they don't think they need or want it;)
* family members, especially our parents, who always love and support us
* for the help that has been freely offered and given by family and friends during the construction of this house, especially during the not-so-fun land clearing process (during the hottest part of the summer) and hopefully during the upcoming painting process ;) These offers of help touch our hearts and let us know we are loved.
* the interest and *insistent* help our dads have given us during this home building process. We couldn't make them go home!! We couldn't have done this without you!! My father-in-law continues to be a constant presence at the house site, offering his help whenever he can. My father reluctantly left for Florida for the winter and cannot continue his "sidewalk superintendent" duties as thoroughly from there, but calls me, my uncles, and friends to keep tabs on the progress:)
* Cousins/nieces/nephew who make family times 'sweet' ;)
* for my sister-in-law, whose birthday was yesterday. I won't give her age here, but I will say she puts more candles on her cake than I do!! hehehehe! (Sorry about that; I couldn't resist!) She is more like a sister to me than anything. I am thankful for her friendship and love, our family co-op which has enriched our learning experience, and her willingness to join me in a Margarita or two! Happy Birthday, Serena. May God grant you many more!
* the inspiration I have received from this blogging world.
* the food that will grace our table today, and the hands that make it.
* much more, but this is getting long!

Thanksgiving
Thankful to have all my children under one roof for a few days
Having family close by to celebrate with
Another year of growth, health and happiness
Never having to worry where our next meal will come from
Kisses and hugs from big and little kids
Sweet family times
God's grace poured freely upon us through the loving hands of Our Mother
Incredibly good, hard working, loving man I have called "husband" for 21 years
Vocation of wife and mother, and the graces and blessings that have come with it
Incredibly good, loving, devoted man our children call "Daddy"
Nighttime sounds of gentle breathing, rustling bedcovers and dh's not-so-gentle snoring
God's presence at the center of our marriage and our family
I have truly been blessed, and I am so grateful.
