Tonight's dinner menu

Here is tonight's dinner menu.  Can you guess what it is in honor of?

* Grilled beef with Portuguese Marinade
* Brazilian Style Rice
* Baked Bananas with Rum
* sliced Kiwi fruit

I got the idea here.  Thanks Ms. Clavel

Yes, we are in a "World Cup" mood around here.  It's pretty exciting.  When I mentioned my stolen borrowed menu idea to the kids yesterday, before I could get the entire idea out, Sammy said, "Oh no! We're not going to do another folder are we?"  Seems he was remembering the Olympics lap book we did this year. (which was fun and informative, btw!  Sam's just in summer mode now.)  Ethan was all for studying the World Cup, even if it meant another lapbook.  I'm sliding into summer mode also.  We won't be doing a lapbook, but the menu idea seems fun!

Imagine how surprised Ethan was when he began watching the World Cup games and saw that many of the players were sporting these:
The very cleats we purchased for him 2 weeks ago!!  Little did we know!  I'm thinking he is hoping it is an omen of things to come:)

Oh, and we're also rooting heavily for these guys.  All of us except hubby, who likes the Lakers!!!  It gets pretty tricky when a lifelong New England boy refuses to choose the local teams as his favorite.  Luckily, our children are learning the right way.  Go Celtics!

Happiness is...

Having your crazy, fun-loving college-going sister home for the holidays.
Especially if she is more than willing to dance with you and show you the latest moves.
Or make a Gingerbread house with you.
They've been staying pretty close to her these past two days. She doesn't seem to mind that arrangement too much;) These are sweet family times, indeed, when all of my children are under the same roof.

Guess what we did today!!

We went to the ocean!! Unfortunately, our oldest son couldn't join us, as he had a prior commitment, but we packed the rest of us up and went to York Beach, Maine for the day. We realized that college girl is leaving in two weeks, so we decided to do something fun with her before she goes. We had a great day.When I was growing up, we spent time every summer in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, as my mom had family there. I LOVE the ocean! The briny smell of the sea, the salty air, the squawks of the seagulls and crashing of the waves...I don't know...it rejuvenates me somehow. It is so easy to feel the presence of God at the ocean and to see and feel His majesty and power.
We first visited the Nubble Lighthouse. It is so charming and picturesque. The tide was out and all the big rocks were exposed. We climbed on the rocks and found little tide pools. Even though it was beautiful, the kids were itching to get to the beach...so off we went.After driving around for an hour (no kidding!) we finally found an open, legal spot and pulled in. Apparently, the car behind us (after we pulled out at an intersection) thought that the space should've been hers, and shouted out her window as she passed us, "You're welcome!" We just looked at each other and shrugged. We understood her frustration. Finding parking was a BEAR! Anyway, the kids dumped their stuff on the sand and raced towards the water. It was as cold as I remember it being, but oh, so fun! Sammy did not want to go to the ocean at first. Apparently, his brother has been telling him shark stories... hmmmmm...But Sam sure conquered his fear! He is definitely a water-lover and is always the last one out of the pool. It was the same at the ocean. He couldn't stay out of the water.Surprisingly, Ethan's soccer pal, Kelsey, and her family were at the same beach. What are the chances of them being in the same part of the beach at the same time we were there--2.5 hours from home! It was fun to see them.
Since the tide was out, there was a large tide pool on the beach that Annemarie thoroughly enjoyed playing in!! We found shells, barnacles, snails and little crabs. The tide pool was much warmer than the frigid Atlantic, so Annie hung out in the tide pool much of the time.In the late afternoon the tide started to come in and the tidal pool disappeared, but we enjoyed the big waves. Well, most of us did. Annie kept running away from them.
On our way home, we stopped at the restaurant I used to stop at as a little girl. It was great! Fresh seafood and lots of ice cream! The perfect ending to our day.
It was the type of day where we could forget all about construction loans, student loans, health insurance and work, and just enjoy God's beautiful creation and each other. Thank you, Lord, for the blessing of this day.

Hottie on the beach!

Fun in the Mud

The pictures aren't the best, but Isaac is covered in mud. He could've gone around the mud patch, but....why? A 16 year old boy's brain just doesn't work that way.

A Good Night for the Sweet Boys

Good Sportsmanship Award for Sammy
2nd & 3rd Grade team (even though Sam's only in 1st grade)

Big brother, Ethan, got the "Unsung Hero" award from his 3rd/4th grade basketball team

Congratulations, boys! We are proud of you!

March Madness

Every March our family fills out our NCAA basketball tournament brackets. We're competing for bragging rights in the Sweet household. We each have our own system for determining our picks...some try to pick the upsets, some pick colleges from states we've visited, I usually try to pick the Catholic colleges (hasn't worked out so well for me, though..), but my dear husband (whose middle initial is W--as in "it's all about the W(in)" usually goes with the top seeds. Now, I have always razzed him about it, since it seems kind of "cheap" to me, but being a serious sports fan and athlete, he does NOT like to lose. And he doesn't lose our family pool very often. Last year, I think he had it sewn up after the first three rounds.
Of course this is all for fun. But since winning is definitely more fun than losing, I decided to change my tactics this year and adopt Mr. "Losing is for sissies'" method. I've got three #1 seeds and one #2 seed in the Final Four. Yes, honestly, I do feel kind of cheap...like I've compromised my standards a little bit...but I'm pretty sure I'll get over it. The Hubster is going down this year!!
Go Tarheels!!

What the boys are cookin'

While I was doing some Thanksgiving baking, the boys thought they would do some cookin' of their own. A recent episode of Mythbusters piqued their curiosity, and they have been nagging asking me to get extra cornstarch for them, so they can experiment with it. It seems the Mythbusters guys were able to walk/run on the top of a mixture of cornstarch and water. The mixture solidifies when it is struck quickly, so if you keep your feet moving, you can actually walk/run on it! Then it "melts" sort of and turns into a liquid again. It is really neat and also a bit weird. I've never seen anything act this way. Unfortunately, they decided to add food coloring to make it even more neat and the food coloring stained their hands blue!! They're gonna look like Pilgrims with frostbitten hands tomorrow.
