She thinks my excavator's sexy....

Years ago, I heard a woman joke that a man was never as sexy as when he was up to his elbows in dishwater. Eh, I didn't agree too much at the time, although I did 'get' the message.  I used to love it when my husband vacuumed.  Until he burned up the vacuum with his perfectionism.  He vacuumed the floors, walls, and ceilings for an hour and a half straight.  The poor hot vacuum just shut off from overexertion.  Luckily, once it cooled down, it did begin working again.

Now, I have to say that when I see my husband working around our house, I think....ummmm, oh yeah...sexy.

You see, when we moved into our new house, it was January.  The landscaping didn't get done of course, since this is New Hampshire and January is NOT landscaping time.  So, instead of a lawn and gardens we have had rocks and dirt.  Actually, my dear hubby did some really cool things with the rocks here, for which I am very grateful.  But, the lack of grass has meant a lot of silty, sandy dirt ends up in my house.  I vacuum so much I fear I will overwork the poor machine too.  And much to my patient husband's chagrin, I mention the lack of grass much too often.    This is only the second weekend of the summer where we have had the time to work outside (and hubby was able to get his equipment moved here).

Here is what we are working on:
The bank behind the house (next to the ledge) is pretty tricky space.  *We* did not want to have to mow it, so *we* decided to build raised beds for our vegetable garden and put bark mulch in between them.  *We* finished them this weekend, as they needed to go in before the loam and seed (Hubby explained the sequence of how things have to get done, but all I heard was a noise like Charlie Brown's teacher.)
**Now, you must realize that when I say 'we' it is just a euphemism.  Really, I came up with the ideas and Scott did the work.  I did help him (minimally) with building the raised beds.  And I brought him cold water and encouragement.

The fact is, we are getting older. He's tired and sore.  Excavating is his profession.  Working around the house is like never having a day off.   When I see him doing these things for love of me and our family, I can't help but love him all the more for it.  So, yes, I get excited when I see him bring home an excavator.  And, yup, I think it's sexy.

Nature's playground

A couple of weekends ago, having a respite from soccer and/or baseball games, Scott began to do some "yardwork".  By yardwork I mean actually creating a yard from the piles of dirt and rock that still surround our new house.  The lack of grass outside means a lot of dirt and sand get tracked into the house by the kids and the dog.  Plus, green, growing things feed my soul...I love gardening and am really missing my time with nature.  I know dirt is natural, too, but it's just not the same.

Here are some pictures of the side yard after dh spread out a big pile of loam.  I was excited to begin to see the shape of the future lawn.

As he was shaping the back bank, he noticed that the 2 outcroppings of ledge that we could see, were actually part of one large slab of bedrock just below the surface.  So he began scraping off the dirt with his machinery.  Then he hand shoveled out the nooks and crannies.  Now, if you didn't know my stoic husband well, you wouldn't have noticed anything unusual, but I could tell he was getting excited.  It was cute.  Is it only excavating contractors who get excited about rocks?
Anyway, after he shoveled it off, he needed to power wash the ledge to finish cleaning all the dirt off.  He has a powerwasher, but he had the wrong nozzle.  After a trip to my brother-in-law's house to get the right nozzle, he was ready to clean that ledge off.  If any of this sounds time-consuming...it was!! The entire process took most of the day.  Here's the finished product:
The kids (and their dad) loved it!!  The veining in the stone reminded them of roads, so out came the matchbox cars.  They spent a long time climbing on the ledge and setting up cars to race down it, crashing and tumbling over the uneven surface.

I love the look of it also, and think about how much time we will save mowing! So ,we ended up not planting grass that particular weekend, but we did end up with a new playstructure.  The best kind.  Indestructible.

More house pix

I really wanted to show college girl what her room, especially her new bed, looks like, so I took some pictures...and some more pictures...and a little more. Here are some rooms in the house that I have not photographed before.College girl's bed has been deemed the most comfortable in the house by her siblings...ummm...and the family dog. The metal bed was left here in the house and we painted it gold. It is so cute! The kids love the soft mattress and puffy comforter. So, here it is, Lexi! Ready and waiting for you. We miss you.
Little princess's half of the girls' room. She has a sweet yellow and pink quilt, but I didn't get close enough to see it well in this picture. I have the matching curtain somewhere for that other window. Perhaps I will find it in my "unpacking more boxes from the basement" session this weekend.Isaac, Ethan, and Sam's rooms (in that order). They all need curtains and more decorative stuff. Most of the bedroom boxes are still down in the basement....again, hopefully this weekend.
The Master Bedroom. I love our bedroom. It is quite large...much larger than it looks in this picture. I am so happy to have our king size bed back. The full size bed (we had at the other house) was too cramped what with all the uninvited company we tend to get during the night:) This room also needs more decorative touches. In time. Here is a shot of our library. There are 5 bookcases in there and they are all full! There are 2 more down in the office, also full. I have put in my request for large, built-in, bookcases...we'll see what happens:) I love my navy jacquard valances against that happy apple green color. Here are shots of the red living room. I love the red; it is so deep and rich. This room is pretty bare bones, also, and in dire need of carpets, curtains and more decorative touches.
I haven't mentioned the laminate flooring. My husband, his dad and our oldest son installed all of it. A friend of Scott's showed them how to lay it and helped with the upstairs. Then they put the rest of the flooring in all thoughout the downstairs by themselves. They did a great job and I really like the way it looks. It is also quite easy to clean.
I refuse to show pictures of the basement as it is now. Ugh. Once I rid it of the boxes and get all of that organized, maybe I'll post pics. Or, maybe it will be spring and we will be outside planting flowers....and, uh, grass.

Favorite Five: Better Late than Never

Inspired by Em and Sue, I thought I would post my own Favorite Five. Yes, it is 6 days too late, but I decided to post it anyway. This month is focused on the kitchen, so here are my five favorite kitchen items:My shiny, one-basin sink. I debated with myself whether to get a one basin or the standard two basin. I have several large pieces of cookware that just wouldn't fit in one side of my two basin sink. I would end up spilling water all over the counter and myself trying to wash them. I finally decided on the one basin and I am NOT sorry. I have washed my large cookware without a spilling problem. It is big, deep and shiny. The faucet is nice also; I especially like the soap dispenser on the left. Flylady would be so proud of my shiny sink. Unfortunately, it doesn't always look this nice. Just prior to taking this picture, it was filled with dirty dishes which I loaded into the dishwasher to take this picture;)
Oh yeah, we are cookin' with gas now! After 3 years of burning our food (regularly) on a flat, glass cooktop (really, I couldn't get used to it!), I am back to cooking on a gas range and oh my, I love it! Although it doesn't show well in this picture, the grates on the top are heavy duty cast-iron. It also has a long, oval middle burner designed for a griddle. The unfortunate part about that is that you have to purchase it separately....yeah, ridiculous....it's not like that griddle is a common piece of cookware. Also, a broiler pan did not come with my new range, either, but I can send away for a free one. I only have to pay $8.95 shipping....I have teased my poor husband relentlessly about our Keurig Gourmet coffee brewer. A couple of winters ago, between storms, when work was slow, he presented me with a well-researched sales pitch about why we should buy a Keurig coffee maker. Gourmet, from the man whose specialty is microwaved hot dogs. He even figured out how long it would take to pay for itself, since he would no longer have to go to the local convenience store to purchase coffee. Well, since this was so unlike him, I didn't have the heart to argue. Plus, I wasn't much of a coffee drinker, so I had to trust his judgment on this. Well, welcome home Keurig! I am so happy you are here. And, I drink a lot more coffee now...delicious, hot, fragrant gourmet coffee....mmmmm

I had two lazy susans in my old kitchen. I hated them. Since we did not replace any cabinetry in this house, I had two lazy susans again. I tried to decide the best way to use these without overloading them, thus making them hard to spin, or putting light things on them that flew out onto the floor when you spun the lazy susan around. Inspired by several homemaking/organizing blogs, I came up with this idea. I purchased several square plastic baskets at the local dollar store. I grouped my baking products and spices together into baskets that I can just pull out of the lazy susan to use when I am baking. In one basket, I put all of my measuring tools--cups, teaspoons, it's all there (that's the basket at the top). In another, I put the baking soda, baking powder, cocoa, and cream of tartar. In another I put the cookie and cupcake decorating items: food coloring, cupcake papers, sprinkles, colored sugar, etc. (see above) I was also tired of trying to locate the proper spices for different dishes I made. They were not organized well. So, I grouped the cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger into one ziploc bag, labeled it and nestled it into one of my baskets. I also did this with the spices I use for the Indian dish I make, Murgh Kari, which requires many different spices. Now I just have to pull the baggie out of the basket and voila! I have all the spices I need, in an instant! I grouped pickling spices and italian spices similarly. (see picture)I am very happy with these lazy susans now, and am anxious to put them to good use!
Last, but not least, I love this wool felt penny rug. It doesn't serve a useful purpose in the kitchen, except to make me happy. It is so bright and colorful and adds pizzazz to the wall.
So there they are, my Five Favorite kitchen items.
See more here.

More settling in

OK, I should be sorting papers, filing, paying bills....instead, I am creating a blog post;)
Here are pictures of our downstairs bathroom. These pics don't do it justice. It really came out nice. And the showers in this house!!! The water pressure!! Oh, so nice! And with our on-demand hot water, someone can be taking a shower WHILE someone does the dishes WHILE the laundry is going!! Our water quality is glorious also. My skin, hair and tastebuds are so happy.

Relative Normal

Wow, what a couple of weeks it has been. And it's not over. We are in our new house, settling in, with a bunch more "settling in" that needs to happen. We are all starting to feel "at home" and are attempting to get back to a normal routine. We began schooling today. I am happy to say that in the several weeks that we have been on "hiatus", the children have not lost any knowledge or skills, but, oh, there has been a serious loss in discipline, structure and motivation! Yikes! It will take a few days to get us all back into our "groove". Meanwhile, here are pictures of the spaces we have unpacked. They are a bit sparse, as most of my decorations are still in boxes in the basement. Also, rugs and curtains are still pending, but here is what we've managed to pull together so far:Dining roomWe purchased this painting of Our Lady "Queen of the Missions" at a flea market when we were first married. It is quite large and I just love it. It looks great in our dining room against this black wallpaper...yup, black. I hesitated a bit about putting black wallpaper up, but I am so glad I did. It looks fantastic and sets off the "winter squash" of the kitchen perfectly. I love it!

In the kitchen, we only did minor renovations: new sink, faucet and countertop, updated appliances and paint. Voila! What a difference. When the sun hits the bright walls in the kitchen, they seem to smile. I know I do. They make me happy.
Wool felt rug I couldn't wait to hang up!

There is more I would like to write about, but it's late and it will have to wait for another time...along with more pictures. Also, I feel a "house vs. home" post coming on....
