Then, while surfing online, I began to notice Catholic moms and others whose opinions I respected, who supported Harry Potter, and even thought the books had a good message! So, I read and read and read--reviews, blogs, and opinions for and against Harry. Each side had a point. The more reading I did, the more confused I got. So, remembering the fact that Our Dear Lord did, in fact, provide me with a functional brain and, by His grace, a fairly well-developed spiritual compass, I decided to go to the source. I am going to (gasp!) read Harry Potter.
And, much to her surprise, I invited my college daughter to read it with me. She was having the same dilemma, as she has a few friends at college who love HP and insist there is nothing wrong with it. She also has friends who declare it evil, along with Tolkein and Lewis. Talk about both sides of the spectrum! (College girl and I dearly love Tolkein and Lewis, no matter what anyone says!!) So, we are having our own little book discussion, college girl, myself and the Holy Spirit. Please feel free to join us by leaving a comment with your own opinion of Harry Potter.

I initially avoided HP, too. I wasn't really convinced that it was "evil" but like you pointed out there was so much STUFF out there against it, I just decided to avoid it altogether. Better safe than sorry, I guess.
Sometime down the road, a family whom I love, respect and trust brought the movie to our home. I was surprised. We hadn't discussed it, but knowing them well, they seemed like they would more likely avoid it as well. But I really, really trust them. They'd already seen it. So we watched it. In the end, I thought, "that's it?! that's what all the fuss is about???" But of course, movies are not books. So I decided that I needed to read the books.
I devoured them. Like so many of those writers you refer to, I found that not only was the criticism and fear about the books unfounded, there were good messages in them! I was hooked. (we love Tolkien and Lewis, too!)
I found that *The Mystery of Harry Potter: A Catholic Family Guide by Nancy C. Brown* is a great resource for looking deeper into the HP series.
I hope you enjoy them.
Have fun! I predict you will love them. We have! Marleigh
